till i read this.

inside the snow globe on my father's desk, there was a penguin wearing a red-and-white-striped scarf. when i was little my father would pull me into his lap and reach for the snow globe. he would turn it over, letting all the snow collect on the top, then quickly invert it, the two of us watched the snow fall gently around the penguin. the penguin was alone in there, i thought, and i worried for him. when i told my father this, he said, "don't worry susie, he has a nice life. he's trapped in a perfect world."

love, love, love

i have been asked to do quite a few commissioned couples portraits lately and it being the month of luuuurve i thought i'd post away.
as an artist, one of my favorite things to explore has always been people. i love drawing people, simply because it amazes me how every nose, every eye, every strand of hair, is different to the next and how one line can suddenly make an otherwise unrecognisable face immediately familiar.

'we shall lack nothing for our Shepherd is the Lord'
this first portrait was done for my friends over at love made visible (super talented and lovely couple, bruce and rebecca). they wanted to bless their fellow wedding photographer friend travis, from we love pictures, with a portrait of him and his beautiful wife maike for his birthday. when i grow up, i wanna be as cool-a-couple as these guys.

'nautical love'
this portrait was commissioned by a couple i had never met. i thought it might be a bit challenging as i usually like to feel connected to my subjects in some way, but diane sent me the most beautiful intro to her relationship with ryan and all i needed was a glimpse of who they are to be inspired. (this lady adores her husband!) when she mentioned the words 'sailing' and 'ocean' i knew exactly what i wanted to do with the piece.
